East of the Sea PDF

Part of A Hobbit’s Journey

Pattern includes line-by-line written instructions and full charts.

This shawl is worked both sideways and bottom up. The lace border is knit first (sideways). Stitches are then picked up along it’s edge for the main body. In the knit-1-long for this shawl some folks chose to cast on for the main body and sew the pieces together later on instead of picking up stitches. This could be an option for you too, however, it is not how the pattern is written.

Blocking & Size
Keep in mind that the finished sizes of lace shawls are always approximate. Your result will vary based on your exact gauge, yarn choice, and blocking style. When blocking my shawl I submerge it in water until fully saturated, letting it soak in wool wash if necessary. After soaking I gently squeeze out excess water. Then, while holding the shawl along its wingspan, I give it a good shake over the bathtub. This help to remove more water and also opens the stitches. Once this is done the piece gets pinned out on blacking mats. Don’t be afraid to stretch your knitting. You’ll know when the yarn has had enough.
